SUBJECT: Big Sur Fire Pre-Attack Mapping Initiative Deliverables
Dear Chief Harris,
Green Infrastructure Design (GID) is pleased to deliver this comprehensive suite of mapping products as part of the CalFire Wildfire Pre-Attack Mapping Grant (18-FP-BEU-2129). This initiative was designed to provide Big Sur Fire (BSF) with a modernized, field-ready Geographic Information Systems (GIS) infrastructure.
These pre-plan maps are a strategic resource designed to assist emergency responders and the community in preparing for and managing wildfire risks. They document a 255-square-mile coverage area of rugged terrain along coastal Monterey County, charting vital infrastructure (roads, bridges, locked gates, utilities), firefighting resources (water sources, hydrants, helistops, radio repeaters), and community details (habitable structures, response zones, land ownership).
The deliverables are categorized into three primary formats to support varying operational needs: large-format Pre-Attack Zone Maps for incident command, Mobile Zone Maps optimized for field devices, and comprehensive Map Books for detailed, localized reference.
Sincerely,
The GID Project Management Team

Information within is intended as a graphical representation of field conditions; the actual location of features in the field may differ from the depiction on the map. Because landscapes and road conditions can change rapidly, this information should be used as a general planning guide rather than an absolute, real-time source.
Large-format strategic overviews for incident command.
These high-resolution, large-format maps are designed to provide a macro-level overview of the entire Big Sur Fire district, divided into three major geographic zones. They are ideal for use at Incident Command Posts or as wall maps in fire stations, offering a comprehensive view of major access routes, large-scale terrain features, and critical strategic resources across wide areas.
Optimized for tablets and smartphones in the field.
These maps cover the same three geographic zones as the Pre-Attack maps but are specifically engineered for digital viewing on mobile devices (tablets and smartphones). They often feature optimized symbology sizes and layouts to ensure readability on smaller screens, making them the primary reference tool for field crews operating directly from apparatus or on foot.
Highly detailed, paginated references for localized navigation.
The Map Books break the district down into a highly detailed grid system. These paginated documents provide the most granular view of the terrain, showing individual address points, precise hydrant locations, and intricate local road networks. They are essential for final-mile navigation and tactical positioning during active incidents.
